It was mid-2008, a rainy winter day in Melbourne. My wife was building her business in a CBD shopping center called The Foundry, an aged building with a lot of history. In the 1850s, during the Melbourne Gold Rush, it was a metal case factory.
I decided to visit my wife's shop to see if she needed facilitate with anything. She was getting some rooms ready for clients to apply and I thought I could facilitate. The mall was relatively novel, so there weren't many stores open yet.
As I was walking through the store, I passed one of the rooms under construction. Inside I saw a couple of guys working on what looked like plumbing. They had made a large hole in the floor and were wearing what looked like aged brown work clothes. I didn't think much of it at the time.
“Good morning,” I said as I walked past.
They looked up and nodded in acknowledgement, then went back to their work. I continued on to the kitchenette at the back of the store where my wife was.
“With who did you talk?” she asked as I approached.
“Guys in the room, of course,” I replied. – Those who work with plumbing.
She gave me a surprised look. “There's no one here but me.”
“Garbage,” I said. “I just saw them. They are working on a gigantic hole in the floor in one of the rooms.
“Let's go take a look,” she suggested, clearly doubtful.
We went back to the room where I saw the workers. I was about to point them out, but when we entered, I was stunned. The room was empty. There was no hole in the floor, no workers, nothing. It was just an empty room with the lights off.
I turned on the airy, half expecting the men to materialize, but the empty room remained unchanged. I walked around, touching the floor where I saw a hole. It was solid. No signs of recent work.
“I don't understand. They were right here. They even greeted me when I said hello.
My wife looked at me worried.
I couldn't shake the anxiety of this situation. I knew what I saw, but there was no evidence to prove it. The room was intact, as if no one was there at all.
It was a strange experience that I still cannot explain.
