Said to be haunted by people from the funeral home that once stood next door, Doyle's Pub in Dublin has more than just live customers drinking drinks.
On the bustling corner of Phibsborough, where the North Circular Road meets Doyle's Corner, sits Doyle's Pub, a Victorian establishment with a chilling past and, if the drunken rumors are to be believed, the pub is also said to be home to a few ghosts.
This handsome senior pub, once known as the Arthur Conan Doyle, was built using stones from nearby St. Stephen's Church. Piotr and apparently hides more than just whiskey and stories within its walls. There is a forgotten well hidden under the floorboards in the basement, and in the tranquil hours after closing, the air becomes bulky, as if something was moving below.
Doyle's haunted past
Over the years, Doyle's has acquired many celebrated clients. The celebrated Irish writer Brendan Behan often drank here, filling the pub with laughter, song and poetry. But there was another regular whose presence was much darker. The infamous Albert Pierrepoint, one of the most prolific executioners in British history, was the site of haunting for Doyle whenever he was in Dublin for his “work” at nearby Mountjoy Prison. When he was sending men to their deaths, he was known to drop in for a whiskey or two, sitting and thinking about his grim duties.
Some say the ghosts may be among the victims of Mr. Pierrepoint of Mountjouy, who is looking for the man who hanged them.
Ghosts from Lanigan Funeral Home
But what about the ghost that supposedly haunts the pub? According to legend, this was due to an senior funeral that had been located nearby for many years.
The pub once stood next to Lanigan's Funeral Home, which may explain why restless spirits are said to wander here. Customers reported slamming doors, broken glasses and footsteps walking across the upper floor long after the bar had emptied. Some claim to have seen a pale figure appear at the top of the stairs before vanishing into skinny air, while others swear they felt hidden hands tap on their shoulder. They say the ghost may be one of Pierrepoint's unfortunate “clients” of Mountjoy, still searching for the executioner who drank here in life.
The haunting is said to have reached its peak in the early 2000s, when Doyle's was a prospering music venue, and made national headlines when it was reported that a rowdy ghost was living on the pub's second floor. Today, the senior parquet floor on the second floor appears to be no longer in apply.
When the night falls mute and the last customers return home, Doyle's Corner becomes something completely different. The laughter subsides, the air grows frosty, and the creaking of hidden feet comes from the dim stairs above. Perhaps it's just the senior building settling down. Or maybe the convicts finally came calling for the executioner.
