Tmaybe it's nothing, but almost every night for the last two weeks (12-1 am) my cat has been behaving very strangely. He usually likes to sleep next to my leg, but lately as soon as I get into bed and lean over to call him, he sits at the end of the bed and stares at the area above my head/behind my shoulder. There is little airy in my bedroom at night due to the double curtains I have installed to allow me to sleep during the day, but his eyes almost glow as he stares unblinking. He is a talkative cat, at such moments he becomes completely mute and his eyes are wide open. I've gotten out of bed to pick him up and he'll sit at my feet and just stare – it's gotten to the point where when it's bedtime, I'll literally call out in my apartment “OK, time to sleep, good night everyone” and he'll climb up in bed and fall asleep. It is also clearly present when I sleep. The only times I remember having nightmares – involving what I call “souls” that aren't exactly nice, or possibly indigestion – were when he was sleeping in the other room. It's like I have to have him close to me to sleep well. It's an ancient apartment (from the 1920s, and as far as I know, there's only been one other family living there besides me (the owner's parents and then his sister), but sometimes I feel like I'm being watched. I know I feel safer with my cat – it seems to have a calming effect on me. The funniest thing was that he was a jet-black cat until last Christmas, when a white spot started growing over his right eye.
