Naggar Castle, located in the rugged mountains of India, is said to be haunted, with guests and staff at the hotel that now serves as a castle recounting their paranormal experiences.
In the picturesque landscape of Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, India, lies the Naggar Castle overlooking the green mountain ranges of the Kullu Valley en route to Manali. Though not the largest castle, this medieval fortress, dating back to around 1460 AD, carries with it not only a prosperous history but also a ghostly mystique.
Today it’s a heritage hotel where you can stay, but the history of Naggar Castle is as fascinating as its Himachal Pradesh architecture of wood and stone. For almost 1,500 years, it was home to the Kullu kings before Kullu became its capital in the mid-19th century.
The name Kullu comes from the word “Kulant Peeth”, meaning “the end of the habitable world”, and the isolated place only got a motorable road after India gained independence in the mid-20th century. Built under the patronage of Raja Sidh Singh of Kullu, it has seen the passing of centuries from its perch on the hills and lower rocky ridges.
One of the legends regarding the construction of the castle has it that Raja Sidh Singh used stones from the abandoned Rana Bhonsal palace, known as 'Gardhak', to build this castle.

As mentioned, Naggar Castle is now a listed hotel and has been since 1978, so even as a hotel it has a prosperous and long history. So where do the ghost stories come from? From when it was a castle or a hotel?
Over the years, Naggar Castle, nestled amidst pines and deodar forests, has gained a reputation for being haunted, with countless eyewitnesses reporting unexplainable and paranormal phenomena occurring within its walls. But what do they see and hear?
Even though there are no ghost stories, the history woven into this elderly, castle-like building still lives on, and strange and spooky phenomena do occur there.
Visitors have reported hearing distinct voices talking and seeing objects moving mysteriously of their own accord throughout the hotel. Typical classic and hidden signs of haunting. But are they real? Visitors who check in and spend time there will have to be the judge.
