Deep contained in the Naini railway station, the tracks and platforms are said to be haunted by former freedom fighters who ended their lives in a close-by prison.

In the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India lies Naini, a town within the Prayagraj district – the local Naini railway station is claimed to be a spot where echoes of the past resound through the mist-shrouded platforms and shadowed tracks.

Built near Naini Jail, still a notorious prison of suffering and oppression during India's struggle for independence, this railway station is a witness to a history stained with blood and tears. And if local legends are to be believed, some freedom fighters are said to haunt the train station.

Freedom fighters from Naini prison

For generations, Naini Prison served as a grim reminder not only of what befell criminals but in addition of British colonial rule, and was a spot where countless souls were imprisoned, tortured and ultimately buried. Some of them are simply fighting for his or her homeland.

Among them were freedom fighters who dared to challenge the might of the empire like Motilal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru (India's first Prime Minister), Govind Ballabh Pant, Narendra Dev, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, Hasrat Mohani, all were imprisoned there during Indian independence movement.

It is claimed that the spirits that haunt the station come from the liberty fighters' movement.

The haunted Naini train station

Naini Prison: The Naini Railway Station haunting is believed to have taken place at a close-by prison that after housed freedom fighters.

Legend has it that the souls of the dead wander across the Naini railway station and the encompassing tracks. Locals speak of ghostly apparitions wandering the abandoned platforms, their silent footsteps echoing within the silence.

While it’s believed that the ghost have to be freedom fighters, there are literally no specific names attached to it as to what number of and what they’re doing on the train station.

Many consider that the tortured souls of freedom fighters who were denied their rightful place in history now haunt the realm. Although their presence terrifies passengers, the spirits that haunt the station are said to be harmless.
