The castle is close to the Raleigh Obelisk, which was erected by Sir Thomas Chapman in 1810, about 200-300m from the house. It was here that Sir Walter Raleigh planted the first potatoes he brought to Ireland.
Killua Castle History
The history of Killua Castle begins in 1667, when Benjamin Chapman, a captain in Oliver Cromwell's army, was granted ownership of the castle and the enormous grounds surrounding it. While the castle we see today took shape around 1780, it has undergone several expansions through generations of the Chapman family.
The family had intriguing links with notable historical figures such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence never lived in the castle, but he visited and was inspired by its grandeur.
For many years, Killua Castle lay in ruins, a noiseless witness to its former glory. It was not until the early 21st century that fresh owners took on the responsibility of restoring the castle to its former glory.
Death of Jacky Dalton
One of the most intriguing stories associated with Killua Castle revolves around Benjamin Chapman’s land manager, Jacky Dalton, who worked there in the slow 18th century. The land manager is described as a low man with a charismatic and cheerful personality. With his crazy yellow wig and bagpipe playing, he became a beloved figure among Chapman and his guests.
However, Dalton's loyalty eventually wavered and he ultimately betrayed his master. As the man was also described as a compact, cunning man with the eyes of a weasel. He deceived Chapman and appropriated his wealth for his own benefit and drinking habits. The regret and guilt haunted him in the years to come, especially after his master's death.
Consumed by remorse, Dalton began drinking heavily and his life spiraled out of control. His cheerful disposition and music were no longer present in the halls of Killua Castle. Unfortunately, he met his end when he drowned in the castle lake.
Killua Castle Haunting
Since then, it has been believed to haunt the mansion. Over the years, witnesses have reported disturbing sightings of a ghostly figure on the grounds of Killua Castle.
