Burning Man

Burning Man

ANDabout 9 years ago me and a mate would go camping a few miles up the coast from where I lived. In the summer we would drink at the Mermaid pub, have a drink on the beach and chat to the other campers' daughters etc. One year a few months after the summer crowds had left we went to the bonfire that is there to watch the fireworks and generally just take part in the festivities. We ended up staying out tardy just wandering around the campsite before finally calling a taxi and waiting outside the Mermaid, in the doorway of the run down toilet block on the edge of the cliff. It was still but there were a few other people there.

Anyway, after a few minutes of standing there, I saw something on the edge of the cliff, in a shallow ditch about 30 yards away; it looked like the beginnings of a fire, and I mentioned it to my mate. I remember saying, “What the hell!” and I think he said something like, “I don't even want to think what that could be.”

We continued to watch and the fire grew until something blue appeared in the middle of it. At first I couldn't tell what it was but it quickly materialised. It or rather 'he' was a man in blue overalls (with shoulder pads), a brown cowboy hat and an orange shirt digging challenging into a trench. As he dug he got lower and lower until at about this point all you could see was his torso, the image seemed to evaporate and the fire was following close behind him. My mate and I didn't talk during the sighting and I don't think we talked much about it on the way home but whenever I did talk to him about it he always joked or brushed it off. I guess some people just don't believe in ghosts… As it happens I haven't seen this mate for years and this experience is the only thing I really remember; this campsite (Tunstall, near Withernsea, near Hull – England) and this – what I can only describe as a ghost.

One woman I told about it in a nightclub a few years later said it might have meant something… I can't remember what, but I sometimes think she might have been right.
