When it involves UFOs, the reality is on the market – or a minimum of that's what countless movies, TV shows and conspiracy theorists would have you think. The idea of a “shadow government” withholding details about extraterrestrial encounters has been a staple of UFO lore for a long time.
The modern era of UFO sightings began in 1947 with the infamous Roswell incident. A UFO allegedly crashed in Roswell, New Mexico, and the wreck (together with its otherworldly passengers) was quickly seized by the military. The official explanation was a weather balloon, but conspiracy circles had already began.
Fast forward to 1952, when the CIA formed the Robertson Panel, a gaggle tasked with debunking UFO sightings to avoid public hysteria. This began a protracted tradition of official denial and obfuscation of UFO phenomena.
Whistleblowers and the seek for truth
Many whistleblowers have come forward through the years claiming that the federal government is concealing evidence of UFOs and extraterrestrial contacts. These individuals range from military personnel to former intelligence officers, and their testimony provides a tantalizing insight into the key world of UFO research.
One of probably the most outstanding whistleblowers is Bob Lazar, who in 1989 claimed he was working on reverse engineering alien technology at a secret location referred to as S-4, near Area 51.
Lazar described seeing nine different alien craft and detailed how they operated using “Element 115,” a then-unknown element that supposedly powered the ships. Although skeptics query Lazar's credibility, his story has endured and fueled speculation about secret government UFO programs.
Another notable figure is Dr. Steven Greer, founding father of the Disclosure Project. In 2001, Greer held a press conference on the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., during which dozens of military, intelligence and government witnesses testified about their UFO experiences.
Greer argues that a cabal inside the federal government – called the “shadow government” – actively hides this information to keep up control and forestall social upheaval.
Adding to that list is David Grusch, a former intelligence official turned whistleblower. In 2023, Grusch testified before Congress, claiming that the US government had recovered “inhumane exotic materials” from crashed UFOs. He he stated“We are not talking about a prosaic origin or identity. The material includes intact and partially intact vehicles.”
The existence of secret government programs dedicated to UFO research isn’t any longer mere speculation.
In 2017, The New York Times revealed the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), a $22 million initiative to analyze UFO sightings. Luis Elizondo, former head of AATIP, confirmed that this system collected and analyzed data on military aircraft encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP).
Elizondo resigned in protest against the excessive secrecy surrounding this system, arguing that the American public had a right to learn about potential threats to national security. In an interview with CNN he said he stated“My personal belief is that there is very compelling evidence that we may not be alone.”
Elizondo said he couldn't speak for the federal government, but strongly suggested that there was evidence that stopped him from ruling out the potential for alien planes visiting Earth.
“These planes – let's call them planes – exhibit features that are not currently in the U.S. inventory or any foreign inventory that we know of,” Elizondo said of the objects he examined.
In 2020, the Pentagon officially confirmed the existence of a successor to AATIP, referred to as the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF). The task force's mission is to “detect, analyze, and catalog UAPs that have the potential to pose a threat to U.S. national security.”
Key developments in reference to the disclosure request
In 2017, three videos recorded by US Navy pilots, referred to as “Gimbal”, “GoFast” and “FLIR1”, were leaked to the general public. These videos showed unidentified objects performing maneuvers that contradicted the known capabilities of any aircraft. The Pentagon later confirmed the authenticity of the videos, sparking renewed interest in UFOs and adding credibility to claims arising from ongoing government investigations.
In June 2020, the Senate Intelligence Committee asked the Director of National Intelligence for a comprehensive report on the UAP. The report, published in June 2021, analyzed 144 observations made by military personnel between 2004 and 2021.
While he didn’t confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life, he admitted that almost all sightings remain unexplained and further research is crucial.
Active from 1952 to 1969, Project Blue Book was an Air Force program that investigated reports of UFOs. Although the project concluded that almost all observations could possibly be explained by natural phenomena or man-made objects, it left 701 cases unsolved. These unresolved cases proceed to fuel speculation of a government cover-up.
Who desires to hide the reality and why?
The idea of a shadow government orchestrating a large cover-up may sound just like the plot of a sci-fi thriller, but there are several plausible the explanation why certain groups will probably want to keep UFO information secret.
One of the essential reasons for secrecy is national security. If UFOs represent advanced technology of alien adversaries or extraterrestrial civilizations, disclosure of this information could jeopardize defense strategies or cause public panic.
If the federal government did recuperate foreign technology, as some whistleblowers claim, it could be of their best interest to maintain the technology secret so as to maintain a strategic advantage.
