In the ancient town of Elche there is an ancient library that is said to be haunted. Securitas claims to have witnessed a whole procession of monk ghosts wandering through rooms that once housed the Franciscan monastery.

The historic and haunted library of Elche has a long and affluent history. Originally founded as a Franciscan monastery in the 16th century, it later served as a charitable hospital before being transformed into a library in the 18th century. This transformation laid the foundation for the library's reputation as a place of knowledge and mystery.

The library's location in the historic center of Elche adds to its importance. Elche itself is known for its affluent cultural heritage, and the library is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its past.

The historic and haunted library of Elche is no stranger to tales of the paranormal. Over the years, there have been numerous tales of ghostly encounters and unexplained phenomena within its walls. One of the most enduring legends is that of the ghost of the monks who once inhabited the library.

According to local folklore, the monk’s spirit wanders the library at night, his presence felt by those who dare to venture into the dimly lit corridors. Visitors report hearing peaceful footsteps and whispered prayers, as if the monk’s spirit continues to perform his duties even after death. Some even claim to have seen the specter of a hooded figure that moves silently between the shelves, disappearing into slender air.

Haunted Library Meetings

One such encounter with the paranormal involved a group of security guards who were stationed at the library during the night shift. They reported strange sounds, icy drafts, and flickering lights that seemed to have no logical explanation. Some even claimed to see shadowy figures flitting around in the corners of their vision, and even an entire monastic procession.

On this particular night in the early 90s, they were making their rounds around the library as usual when one of them heard the sound of chains being dragged across the ground from the courtyard. Later that night, around 3 o'clock, he heard the same thing again in the library. When he went to check, he found piles of books stacked on a table, although no one had entered. He tried to ignore it and went back to work. But then a ghostly monk appeared and fled the library, running as brisk as he could, and spent the rest of the night in his car with his gun at the ready, scared to death.

The story reached the press, but library staff were asked not to talk about ghosts and spirits in the library. Their job was to offer a book service, not ghost stories. What could it be?

Sure, there are many things that could explain strange things happening in an ancient building like a library. According to an employee at the time, it was apparently an infestation of rats in the air, making strange rattling and scratching sounds. The books could have been a joke, or just something the security guard forgot. Wind can also make mystical sounds. But a whole procession of monks?
