Today, traces of the Anemone Cave, otherwise known as Devil's Cave or Devil's Oven, have all but been obliterated from the park. Dangerous because the tide completely floods the cave. Stories have been told for centuries about strange things happening around the cave.

Hidden along the misty shores of Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park, the ominous sea cave known as Anemone Cave, or as it is also known, Devil's Oven, stands quiet witness to centuries of mystery and incredible legend.

Acadia National Park is a stunning nature reserve located primarily on Mount Desert Island, the largest offshore island outside the state of Maine in the United States. Founded in 1916, it encompasses over 49,000 acres of rugged coastline, lush forests, granite peaks and pristine lakes.

Acadia National Park is not only a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, but also a place of profound natural beauty and ecological significance.

Removed from Acadia National Park maps

The Haunted Devil's Oven is located near DeGregoire Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. It is said that you have to get there at low tide so as not to be completely submerged underwater.

Years ago, the Anemone Cave was marked on the National Park map trail. Today, the signs have been removed and the name has disappeared from the map and even the railings have been removed to discourage people from finding the slippery path, and for good reason, and only those who know of its whereabouts or search for it on the Internet can find it.

Said to protect the small sea anemone life, tourists have often been injured or trapped by the tide in the caves. There has also been at least one death in current times. But even though it has been removed from the map, it is still there as the legend surrounding it.

The history of the anemone cave

This hidden alcove has long been shrouded in tales of the supernatural, and whispers of a portal to the underworld echo throughout the annals of Mount Desert Island's history.

Anemone Cave takes its name from the anemones, but only in recent years has it become known as both Devil's Cave AND Sea Cave among others. The origin of the ominous name, The Devil's Oven it is not certain, but it is said that the cave itself looks like a skull, and paranormal phenomena occur at both high and low tides.

Even in this day and age, the Devil's Oven still evokes a sense of unease and ghostly energy. Overnight visitors report witnessing inexplicable lights sparkling and flashing in the depths of Anemone Cave, casting an eerie glow across the coastal expanse.

Religious offerings inside the cave

However, this is not just a current phenomenon, but since the time of European settlers and even further back, in the stories of Native Americans, there has been something wrong with caves. Those who venture nearby during the day report hearing haunting screams and strange songs carried by the sea breeze.

There is a claim in the book Ghosts of Acadia where author Marcus Librizzi claims that the cave was used by Native Americans where they performed terrible and grotesque rituals and sacrifices where, according to legend, they slowly drowned people by the rising tide.

A warning to visitors seeking the Anemone Cave

For intrepid souls wishing to unravel the mysteries of the Devil's Furnace, there remains a warning. The sea cave can only be reached at low tide, which is a risky journey full of sea challenges. Due to a piercing escalate in drownings and risky sea rescues, the National Park Service has removed all barriers and signs leading to Anemone Cave, emphasizing the need for caution, and even experienced climbers have died.

When considering the allure of the Devil's Furnace, consider not only the haunting rumors of its existence, but also the inherent risks that come with pursuing the supernatural. In the murky land between legend and reality, Acadia National Park holds secrets that invite captivating yet cautionary tales that echo through time.
