The Kleinbasel district is probably one of the most haunted places in Basel, Switzerland. In a modest house in Rebgasse 38, the well -known exorcist Johann Jakob von Brunn visited twice to throw ghosts in it.
In the winding avenues of Kleinbasel, where centuries -old buildings bend towards each other, and the twilight seems to gather early, once a house stood, which no one dared to approach in their right mind. At a house, which was also seemingly used as a presbytery, a marriage that lived there from 1888 to 1907, informed about the ghostly events of previous tenants. It also looks like it was haunted long before entering.
There are many ghost stories in the Kleinbasel district in Basel. In Rebgasse 38 there were apparently two ghosts haunting this particular building. First, the dead wife of a man who got married again after her death, and a woman named Grethi Beck had a bad eye.
A house whose shadows do not leave
House in Rebgasse 38, also known as House for an vintage trot (House of the vintage wine press) has long been welded with ominous whispers. The locals talked about unseen presence, shadows that moved alone, and freezing the terrifying sound of phantom traces when no one else was close.
Some claimed that it was the work of “Gray Man”, a spectral form of unspecified origin known for the persecution of some houses in Basel and this particular working class district.
It was said that Margrethe (Gretsi) Beck was a maid when pastor Johann Jakob übelin lived there (1793–1873). He was a Swiss Protestant theologian, deacon, chronicle, cartoonist, botanist and author. Then he worked in Basel for 27 years as a deacon to the church of St. Teodoru, and from 1845 to 1867 as a construction official. In 1818, übelin married Margaretha, née Brenner (1798–1840), with whom he had eight children.
It is said that she stole money from the pastor, and when she died, she seemed to him and later tenants as a spirit. People were convinced that they caused bad things with the Kleinbasel people. And the way people talk about this matter, it seems that it was when she lived. There is not much information about how she died, but also after death she scared her neighbors. It is said that he sits on the stairs in the staircase and although Johann Jakob übelin got another clergy who exorcined her, her haunting seemed to last.
Exorcism against darkness
The government and the clergy have made every effort to counteract superstition and related stories. On Sundays, priests gave warnings from the pulpit against developing a fairy and cult with the devil and advised people not to believe in them. It is not known whether the haunting took place when Johann Jakob übelin still lived at home or was it.
Finally, the city turned to the most eminent spiritual defender: pastor Johann Jakob von Brunn, a clergyman known for his boldness in confrontation with supernatural and apparently he was a well -known ghost hunter in Basel. Apparently, he faced so-called witches, expelled demons from the animal barn and cleaned the cursed well-now he was called to face Rebgasse 38.
It is said that von Brunn entered the house armed with holy water, relics and the arsenal of antique prayers, undressed with suffocating fear that clung to the walls. It is said that the spirit of the former hostess to the corner of the room on the first floor of the house.
And for some time peace returned to Rebgasse, although the family dog howls towards the same corner of the room, as if he had sensed the presence there. And then the tenants still saw her, sitting on the stairs.
The scandal of Johann Jakob übelina woke up the ghost
As mentioned, it was not the only ghost who said that he was persecuted by the house, and the other was the dead wife of Johann Jakob übelin. Margaretha died at around 1839 and later returned as a ghost. In November 1845, Johann Jakob übelin caused a scandal when he had an affair with his chef, Henriette Rosine Trautwein.
For this reason, he had to give up his position and married Henriette in 1846 because she was pregnant. They had a son together, and he lived in his professional life until 1867 as a construction official. He died in 1873.
After the whole scandal, it was said that the spirit of the Margaretka returned to persecute them because of her husband's infidelity, although she was dead. Who knows when it really began. It was said that she had persecuted the presbytery until she was banished by the Ghost Hunter Johann Jakob von Brunn.
A shadow that never disappeared
Although the navigation stopped, the house was never really free from its reputation after the spirit of Gretshi Beck and the deceased wife of Johann Jakob übelin. Some say that in specific nights you can still feel a cool, tear look from the upper window, although nobody lives there.
Today, the place where Rebgasse 38 once stood has a miniature trace of his haunted history. At the address that once belonged to the building, which was haunted, there is now a kindergarten. But vintage stories remain in whispered repetitions among local Ghostwalk guides, reminding that in places such as Kleinbasel some shadows leave their trail forever, if someone remembers.
