There is a legend of ghosts from Roman times in Zurich. The story of martyrs and saints Felix, Reguli and Exuperantis, who arose from their death and walked with their heads under the arms, is still an crucial story for the city.

Before it became the iconic city of Swizz, which is today, it was once a Roman institution. By becoming the image of the city of Zurich, a ghostly tale of Felix, Regula and Exuperantis helped shape the city to become what it is today.

One of the earliest stories of ghosts that Zurich has to offer is the story of three patrons and what happened after their execution, when they were made of the land in which they were carried out.

The legendary Legion Theban and Saints Zurich

Felix, Regula and Exuperantis fled to Zurich in the third century. Felix and Regula were siblings and members of the Theban Legion based in Egypt. It is said that they came from Egyptian nobility. Exuperantis was their servant. The Legion, also known as the Martyr of Agaunum, was stationed at the Roman Agaunum facility in Valais, Switzerland. The Legion consisting of 6666 MED was Christians led by Saint Mauritius, dying as a martyr around 287.

Ten thousand martyrs

They went through the Alps to postpone Gallian Rebelion on the order of Emperor Diocletian. When the Legion refused to sacrifice to the emperor Maximian from the Roman Empire, they escaped when they began to perform every ten people.

They went through Valens, proclaiming the Gospel. For some time they remained in a cave in the desert. Coptic Christians reached Zurich, which was then called Turicum in 286 and others with a Christian family.

They were discovered by a man named Decius, who were ordered to hunt for pagans. First, he tortured them, beating and putting them into boiling oil to reverse them. Despite this, they refused to worship Roman gods. Then they were cut in a place where Wasserkirche is now.

However, their story was not done and after their death their corpses stood up and raised their heads to the ground before he left. A trace of blood followed them. They went up to forty steps up the hill, to the hill where they prayed before laying, thinking that this is a better place to bury.

The truth behind the legend of Felix, the rules and death of Exuperantis

So what really happened in Roman times? Is this one of the old ghost stories? Some experts would question the basics of history at all.

The story of how they fled and moved their heads to the hill, actually came to the monk in Florentius in a dream in the eighth century. In the ninth century there was a tiny monastery, and the holiness of this place grew over time … a place where their alleged graves are now the most celebrated landmark of Zurich, the Church of Grossmünster, which was built from around 1100. Wasserkirch was built on the site of their execution.

From the 13th century they were saints and crucial to people in Zurich. But after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1524, their graves were opened. Some claimed that they were already empty, except for several bone fragments. Some say that Uri's man has stolen andmt bones, where today you can see the skulls of Felix and Reguli. The rest of the remains were sent to Zurich today in the church dedicated to the saint.

The aforementioned skulls were dated to coal, in which it dates back to the Middle Ages. The second skull is fragments of two different. One of the Middle Ages and the other can come from Roman times.

Were they even there? Some say that Theban Legion is fictitious, although some historians still claim that the evidence placed a legion in Switzerland at that time. Despite this, their holiday is September 11 in the Gregorian calendar, and the story is still told that they arose from their death, head in hand.
